Picture this: a supplier sends you a 40-page contract and all you need is one line — the payment terms. You could scroll for twenty minutes, or you could ask. Drop the PDF in the tool above, type “What are the payment terms?”, and the tool shows you the exact sentences from the document, with page numbers. No account, no upload, no waiting room.
Here is the honest workflow, start to finish:
- Open your PDF. Drag it onto the drop area, pick it from your files, or press “Try a sample document” to see how it works on a ready-made example.
- Wait a moment while it reads. The tool pulls the text out of every page and builds an index, right here in your browser. A 50-page report takes a few seconds.
- Ask in plain words. “How much does the premium plan cost?”, “When is the warranty valid until?”, “Who signed the agreement?” — normal questions, the way you would ask a colleague.
- Read quoted answers with page numbers. Each answer is a passage copied word-for-word from your document, with the page it came from and the matching words highlighted. Tap “Show surrounding context” to see the sentences around it.
- Try the suggestions. After the document loads you get starter chips — “What is this document about?”, “Key points”, plus chips built from the document’s own most-used words.
What this tool actually does (no magic, no cloud)
Most “chat with your PDF” sites send your file to their servers, where a large AI model reads it. This tool works differently on purpose: everything happens in this browser tab. It extracts the text, breaks it into sentences, and when you ask a question it scores every sentence against your words — rare words count more than common ones, exact phrases get a boost, and questions about dates or amounts prefer sentences that contain numbers. The winners are shown to you as quotes.
That is also why it has a strict rule it never breaks: it never invents an answer. If your document does not contain the answer, it says so plainly and suggests how to ask better. A chatbot would guess; this tool would rather admit it does not know.
What it can and cannot do
It can find facts, figures, names and dates in text-based PDFs fast, quote them with page numbers, summarize what a document is about, and list its key points. It cannot read scanned image-only pages (there is no text to search — it will tell you this instead of guessing), it does not reason or combine facts from different pages into a new conclusion, and it only reads English well for now. Password-protected files are refused by design.
Common Questions
Is this real AI?
It is a smart on-device search, not a cloud AI. There is no chatbot model here and nothing is sent to any server — your question is matched against the document’s own sentences and the best matches are quoted back to you. That is a feature, not a limitation: your file stays private and the answers are always the document’s real words.
Is my document uploaded anywhere?
No. Everything happens inside your browser on your own device. Your file never leaves your computer, and closing the tab wipes it from memory.
What if the answer is not in the document?
The tool says so honestly — “I couldn’t find that in this document” — along with tips for asking better. It will never make up an answer to fill the silence.
My PDF gives no answers at all. Why?
Almost certainly it is a scanned PDF: the pages are pictures of text, not real text. The tool detects this and tells you. Run the pages through our JPG to Word (OCR) tool first, then ask questions about the result.
How do I get better answers?
Use the document’s own words. If the contract says “delivery time”, ask about “delivery time” rather than “shipping”. Short questions about one thing at a time beat long complicated ones, and names, numbers and dates are the easiest targets of all.
Can I copy an answer?
Yes — every answer has a “Copy answer” button that copies the quoted passages with their page numbers, ready to paste into an email or a note.
