How to Split a PDF Online Free: Step-by-Step Guide

You know the feeling: someone sends you a 60-page PDF and says "look at page 7." Or the opposite — you have a big PDF and the form only lets you upload files under 2 MB. Sometimes a document is simply bigger than the job it's needed for, and what you really want is a smaller piece of it.

That's what splitting a PDF means: pulling a few pages out into their own file, or turning every page into its own separate PDF. It takes seconds, it's free, and there's nothing to install.

The Steps (Dead Easy)

  1. Add your PDF. Drop one PDF into the tool above. It opens right in your browser — nothing is uploaded anywhere.
  2. Pick a mode. Choose Extract pages to pull out a specific set of pages, or Every page as its own PDF to break the whole document into single-page files.
  3. For extract mode: type the pages you want, like 1-3, 5, 8-10. The tool checks your ranges and tells you exactly what's wrong if something doesn't make sense — a page that doesn't exist, a reversed range, a stray comma.
  4. Hit the button. The tool builds your new PDF (or PDFs).
  5. Download. Grab the single extracted file — or download pages one by one, or take them all in one ZIP.

When Splitting Helps

Send only what matters. Your bank statement is 40 pages; the landlord only asked for the last 3 months. Extract those pages and send that. Nobody needs to scroll through your whole financial history.

Beat the upload limit. University portals and job sites love small files. If a 15 MB PDF gets rejected, split out just the pages they actually asked for and the result is tiny.

Separate chapters and sections. An e-book with 12 chapters becomes 12 neat files, one per chapter, with ranges like 1-14, 15-32, 33-50.

Single forms from a pack. Offices often hand out one big "forms pack" PDF. Extract the one page you need, print it, sign it — the rest stays untouched.

Share one page at a time. "Look at this" works best when "this" is a one-page PDF in the chat, not a 60-page document nobody will open.

Good to Know

Extract vs split-all. Use Extract pages when you know exactly which pages you need — it's precise and you get one file. Use Every page as its own PDF when the whole document needs breaking up: scanned books, receipt batches, certificates collected in one file.

Ranges are forgiving, but checked. Write pages in any order — "5, 1-3" becomes pages 1, 2, 3, and 5. Duplicates collapse automatically. And if you type something impossible (page 99 in a 20-page PDF, or "1,,3"), the tool tells you plainly what's wrong instead of failing silently.

One ZIP for many pages. When every page becomes its own PDF, downloading dozens of files one by one gets annoying — and some browsers block lots of downloads. The Download all (.zip) button bundles everything into one tidy ZIP. Your choice: individual pages for the one or two you need, the ZIP for the whole set.

Your original is untouched. Splitting reads your PDF and builds brand-new files. The source stays exactly as it was, so experiment freely.

Quality is preserved. Pages are copied as-is, not re-rendered. Text stays selectable, images stay crisp — splitting doesn't compress or degrade anything.

Encrypted PDFs won't work. If a PDF asks for a password, the tool can't read it — it will tell you so. Open the file in your PDF reader, save a copy without the password, and use that copy instead.

Common Questions

Is splitting PDFs free?

Yes. No account, no watermark, no limits games. Split as often as you like.

Do my files get uploaded anywhere?

No. Everything happens inside your browser tab, on your own device. Your documents never travel to a server.

Can I extract non-consecutive pages like 2 and 5?

Yes. Type "2, 5" (or "2,5" — spaces don't matter). You can mix singles and ranges freely, e.g. "1-3, 5, 8-10".

What order do the extracted pages come in?

Ascending page order. Even if you type "5, 1-3", the result contains pages 1, 2, 3, 5 — in document order. This keeps the output predictable.

How do I get just one page?

Use Extract mode with a single number — type "7" and you get a one-page PDF containing page 7.

What about password-protected PDFs?

The tool can't read them. Unlock the file first (open it in your PDF reader and save a copy without the password), then split the copy.

Can I split a PDF into individual pages or multiple files?

Yes. Load the PDF, choose which pages go into each part, and save the parts as separate PDFs — or pull every page out as its own file, one by one or all together in a ZIP. It is the quick fix when a 40-page report lands on your desk but only page 7 needs to go to the client.

That's it. Big PDFs aren't heavy once you can lift out exactly the pages you need.
