How to Convert PDF to EPUB Online Free: Step-by-Step Guide
Picture this: someone sends you a 200-page PDF report, and you are supposed to read it on your phone on the train. You open it, and every page is a tiny fixed sheet you have to pinch, zoom, and drag around, line by line, like reading a newspaper through a keyhole. By page three your eyes hurt and the report goes back in the downloads folder, unread. I have done exactly that more times than I care to admit.
An EPUB fixes the reading, because an EPUB is not a fixed page — it is flowing text. Your reader app wraps the words to fit your screen, lets you crank the font up, switch to a night theme, and keep your place across devices. This tool takes the text out of your PDF and rebuilds it as a proper EPUB 3 ebook. Free, no sign-up, and the file never leaves your browser.
- Add your PDF. Drop the file in, or press “Try a sample file” to watch a little six-page story become an ebook.
- Check the title. The tool reads the document’s own title if it has one, and otherwise uses the file name. Either way you can type a better one — that title is what your reader app will show on its shelf.
- Pick a chapter size. One chapter per page is closest to the original; one per 5 or 10 pages gives you longer, more book-like chapters and a shorter contents list.
- Convert and download. Press “Convert to EPUB,” then open the .epub in Apple Books, Google Play Books, Kobo, Calibre, or whatever reader you like. That’s the whole PDF to EPUB convert — one click, one readable ebook.
Where This Honestly Shines
Reports, manuals, and course notes. Long text-heavy PDFs are miserable on a phone and lovely as EPUBs. Convert the thing once, then read it in bed with the font at a size your eyes actually approve of.
Older books and public documents. Government reports, classic texts, family-history PDFs — if the PDF has a real text layer, the words come across cleanly and the reader app handles the rest.
Reading offline and in peace. Once the EPUB is on your device, there is no tab to keep open and no zoom dance. Just you and the words.
When It Will NOT Work Well (Read This Before You Complain)
This is a text conversion, not a photocopy. The EPUB is built from the PDF’s words, in order, as reflowable paragraphs. The PDF’s exact layout does not come across: no page design, no columns, no fonts, no headers and footers arranged just so. If you need the pages to look identical, keep the PDF — that is what PDFs are for.
Pictures and diagrams do not travel. Images inside the PDF are not carried into the EPUB. A cookbook’s photos and a textbook’s charts will be missing, and a table will arrive as lines of text in reading order, not as a neat grid. For a text-first book that is fine; for a visual book it is a deal-breaker, and I would rather tell you now than after you convert it.
Scanned PDFs have no words to take. If your PDF came from a scanner, each page is a photograph, and there is no text layer to extract — the tool will tell you so instead of quietly handing you an empty book. Run the file through an OCR tool first to give it real text, then bring it back here.
Chapter breaks follow pages, not the book. Real chapters in a hand-made ebook start where the author put them. Here, chapters are honest page groups — one page, five, or ten at a time — because a PDF simply does not tell us where its chapters begin. The contents list will say “Pages 11–15,” not “Chapter Three.”
Good to Know
Your files never leave your device. The whole conversion runs inside your browser tab, so private documents — contracts, statements, your own unpublished manuscript — stay exactly where they belong: with you.
It is a real EPUB 3. The output follows the standard properly (stored mimetype first, a valid package file, a contents page your reader can navigate), so it opens in the major reader apps rather than being a renamed zip with good intentions.
Encrypted PDFs won’t work. If the PDF asks for a password, the tool cannot read its text. Save a copy without the password in your PDF reader and convert that.
Common Questions
Is this PDF to EPUB converter free to use?
Yes. No account, no watermark, no page limits. Convert as many PDFs as you like.
Do my files get uploaded anywhere?
No. Everything happens in your browser, on your own device. Nothing is sent to a server at any point.
Will the EPUB look exactly like my PDF?
No — and that is the point of an EPUB. You get the same words as clean, flowing text your reader can resize and re-theme. Page layout, columns, images, and exact formatting stay behind in the PDF.
Why did the tool say my PDF has no text?
Because the pages are images, almost always from a scanner or a phone camera. Text you can see is not text a computer can read until OCR has been over it. Run it through an OCR tool first, then convert the result here.
Which apps can open the EPUB?
Apple Books, Google Play Books, Kobo, Moon+ Reader, Calibre, Thorium — any standard EPUB 3 reader. Kindles are the odd ones out: send the file through Amazon’s Send to Kindle, which accepts EPUB and converts it for you.
Can I change the book’s title?
Yes. The title box is filled in for you from the PDF’s own title or the file name, and anything you type there is what appears in your reader’s library and in the file name.
How long does a PDF to EPUB convert take?
Usually under a minute for a normal book — the PDF to EPUB convert happens in your browser, so nothing is uploaded and there is no queue.
That’s the whole trick. Next time a heavy PDF lands on your phone, you’ll be reading it like a proper book before your tea cools down.
