Picture this: you are standing in a shop, phone in one hand, a price tag in the other — “35% off, was 4,499”. Everyone else seems to do this arithmetic like breathing. Your thumb hovers over the phone calculator, the queue behind you is growing, and a little voice inside says it is probably fine, just buy it. That little voice has cost people a lot of money over the years.

There is a better way than squinting at a calculator app and typing the wrong number twice: a percentage calculator that does the thinking for you — X% of Y, “what percent is that”, price changes, discounts and tips — free, in your browser, without uploading anything anywhere. Here is how to calculate percentages online in seconds.

How to calculate percentages online, step by step

Step 1 — Open the calculator. Go to the Percentage Calculator on AllConvert. No account to create, nothing to install; it runs entirely in your browser.

Step 2 — Pick the right mode. Four tabs sit at the top: X% of Y (what is 15% of 480?), X is what % of Y (38 out of 60 — what percent?), % Change (the price went from 90 to 120 — how big a jump?), and Discount / Tip (shop sales and restaurant bills). The shop-sale question is the Discount tab; the restaurant question is the Tip sub-tab.

Step 3 — Type your numbers. Enter the two values and press Calculate. The answer lands instantly in a big highlighted box — and it shows the full working too, so you can double-check the formula it used. Discount answers include what you save and the final price; tips show the tip amount and the bill total.

Step 4 — Sanity-check the direction. This one matters: the Discount tab takes money off the price, the Tip tab adds it on. Before you wave the answer at a cashier, glance at the formula line under the result — it is there precisely so you catch a wrong tab before it costs you.

Step 5 — Keep comparing. Your entries stay in the boxes when you switch tabs, so “30% off 4,499” versus “25% off 3,999” is one click. There is even a theme toggle for midnight calculations.

Why the “wrong-tab” mistake is the real percentage problem

Most percentage errors are not arithmetic errors — they are question errors. People ask “what is 20% off?” when they mean “what percent did I save?”, or they compute the tip on the pre-tax total when the table norm is the post-tax one. A calculator that shows its working does something a phone app never does: it lets you see which question you actually asked. That one visible formula line is the difference between a confident answer and a confident wrong answer.

Honest limits — what this calculator will not do for you

It will not decide which mode you need. It computes exactly what you type into whichever tab is open. If you meant “X is what % of Y” but opened “X% of Y”, you will get a perfectly correct answer to the wrong question. Read the tab names before you type.

Percentage change from zero is undefined. “From 0 to anything” has no meaningful percentage — the tool says so instead of inventing a number. Respect it; that is math, not a limitation of the page.

It rounds sensibly, but money is your call. Results are rounded to a clean two decimals. For actual cash amounts, round to two yourself and check whether your shop rounds up or down — currencies have their own rules that no calculator owns.

It does not store your calculations. Close the tab and your numbers are gone. If you are comparing ten sale prices, screenshot the results or jot them down — nothing here is uploaded, and nothing is saved either.

The short version

Open the calculator, pick the right mode, type two numbers, check the working. Five seconds of work that saves you from the queue-line arithmetic panic — and from that little voice saying it is probably fine. No sign-up, no upload, no cost.
