The university says “1,500 words, give or take ten percent.” You are fairly sure you are close. Microsoft Word says one number, your phone’s notes app says another, and the online checker you just tried counted the bibliography as three words. Word counts are one of those small things that turn oddly stressful at midnight before a deadline — and all you want is one trustworthy number, live, as you edit.

A word counter tallies your words, characters, sentences, and paragraphs in real time, and even estimates how long your text takes to read or speak. Here is how to count words online, free, without sending your draft to a stranger’s server.

How to count your words, step by step

Step 1 — Open the counter. Go to the Word Counter on AllConvert. No account, nothing to install.

Step 2 — Type or paste your text. Drop your draft straight into the box. Want to see it in action first? Press “Load sample text” and watch every stat move.

Step 3 — Watch the live counts. Words, characters, characters without spaces, sentences, and paragraphs update as you type — no button to press, no page to refresh.

Step 4 — Check the times. Estimated reading time (at the standard 200 words per minute) and speaking time (150 wpm) sit right below the stats — gold for presentations with a time slot.

Step 5 — Scan the keywords. The top-words list shows what your text keeps repeating. “Very” appearing forty times in your essay? Now you know before your examiner does. One button clears the box when you are done.

What counts as a word (and why it is fair)

This counter uses a proper unicode-aware rule, not the lazy “split on spaces” shortcut. A word is a run of letters or numbers — so don’t and well-known each count as one word, exactly the way your teacher counts them. Emoji never count as words. Commas stuck to words do not inflate the total. When two counters disagree, this is usually the reason — and this one follows the sensible definition, consistently, every time.

Honest limits — read this before the deadline

The reading time is an estimate. 200 words per minute is the standard average for silent reading. Dense, technical, or unfamiliar text takes longer in real life — budget extra if your essay has equations or jargon.

Speaking time assumes a steady pace. 150 wpm is a confident presentation pace. If you pause for questions or nerves, add a buffer. Rehearsing once with a stopwatch still beats any estimate.

Formatting does not count. The counter reads your text, not your headings or layout. A 1,500-word essay with a 400-word quote block is still 1,900 words — some schools exclude quotes, so check your brief.

Very long documents can get heavy. There is no length limit, but pasting a whole thesis into one page works your browser tab harder. Splitting it into chapters counts faster and lets you check each one against its own target.

The short version

Paste your text, read the numbers, adjust. Live counts, fair word rules, reading and speaking times, and a top-words list that catches your tics. No sign-up, no upload, no limits.

Finished the essay? Word to PDF locks it into a clean, uneditable format for submission — and if a professor sends notes back as a PDF, PDF to Word makes them editable again. Both free, no sign-up.
