How to Redact a PDF Online Free (No Sign-Up, No Upload)
You are about to share a contract, and it has salary figures, bank details, and someone’s national ID number in it. The lazy answer — drawing black rectangles over the text in your PDF app — is a famous trap: the “hidden” text is still sitting underneath, selectable and copy-pasteable. Real redaction does not cover text up; it destroys it.
The free Redact PDF tool does true redaction in your browser. You draw black boxes over the sensitive bits, and it rebuilds the PDF with those areas burned into the pixels — no text layer, no metadata, nothing to recover. Here is how to redact a PDF online without uploading it anywhere.
How to redact a PDF online, step by step
Step 1 — Open the redactor. Go to the Redact PDF tool on AllConvert. Everything happens on your own device — your document never touches a server.
Step 2 — Add your PDF. Drop the file into the upload box and you will see its name and details inside the box. Want to practice first? Press “Try a sample file” — it builds a two-page demo full of fictional sensitive data.
Step 3 — Black out the sensitive parts. Pick a page from the thumbnail strip, then drag black boxes over names, numbers, addresses — whatever must go. Click any box to remove it, undo the last one, or clear a page and start over. Each page shows how many redactions you have made.
Step 4 — Tidy up. Rotate a crooked page, delete a page you do not want to share, pick a quality (Standard is fine for screen, Print for paper), and name your output file.
Step 5 — Redact and download. Hit “Redact & download” and the tool rebuilds the PDF from scratch — every page re-rendered as an image with your black boxes burned in. Your original file is never modified.
Why this is real redaction, not black rectangles
Most “redaction” tricks fail the same test: select all, copy, paste — and the secret appears. This tool passes the test because there is no text left to select. The output pages are images, the document’s metadata is wiped clean, and every page is rebuilt — even the ones you did not touch.
Honest limits — read this before you share
The redacted copy is not searchable. Since pages become images, text can no longer be selected or searched in the result — so never redact your only copy of anything.
Password-protected PDFs are refused. Encrypted files are turned away with a clear message.
Very large PDFs get slow. Re-rendering hundreds of pages takes real time; the Print quality setting is the slowest of all. For screen sharing, Standard is enough.
The short version
Open the tool, add the PDF, drag black boxes over the secrets, download the rebuilt file. No sign-up, no upload, no cost — and the redaction is genuine, not a rectangle on top of live text.
Trimming a file before you redact? The Split PDF tool pulls out just the pages you need to share, and Compress PDF shrinks the result for email — same free, no-upload idea. For editable originals, there is Word to PDF.
